ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Tomi Davies
Harry ‘Tomi Davies (TD) is Collaborator-in-Chief (CiC)’ at TVC Labs, an entrepreneurship support organisation in Lagos, Nigeria which he founded. He is also Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at Greentec Capital Partners, Frankfurt, Germany, a venture capital firm focusing on Africa.
TD is co-founder of the Lagos Angel Network (LAN), Chairman of Diaspora Angels Network (DAN) and ccHub Syndicate, founding President of the African Business Angel Network (ABAN) and board member of the Global Business Angel Network (GBAN).
After graduating from the University of Miami in 1982, TD led innovative technology-enabled transformation initiatives for influential global brands such as Elf Aquitaine, Marks & Spencer, Ernst & Young and Sapient across Europe, the United States and Southeast Asia.
In 2000, his focus shifted to Africa where he worked on various technology-led innovation initiatives in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana and Kenya using his goal-oriented approach to project delivery which inspired his 2014 book “The African Project Manager”.
TD is Chairman of TextNigeria (Telecoms) and Non-Executive Director at MBO Capital (Private Equity) and sits on the boards of Big Cabal Media (Media & Entertainment), Powerstove (Renewables) and Laptops4Learning (L4L) Nigeria (Edutech NGO). He also Chairs the Innovation Committee of the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC) as well as the Innovation Support Network (ISN).
As a thought leader with insights gained from a growing portfolio of tech-enabled startup ventures originating from Africa, his personal goal is simply to ”Find, Fund & Follow”, African founders that are using technology-enabled innovation to create economic value and social impact on the continent “to Fulfil their Future” of building a better continent.
In December 2021, TD was named as one of the “100 Most Influential Africans of 2021” by New African Magazine.

This is a book that helps startup founders and their investors have a conversation about how best to build a successful startup. A startup vision can be brought to life using the POEM Framework. This acronym stands for Proposition, Organisation, Economics and Milestones. In this book, I share how you use the POEM Framework to successfully build a startup business venture.
First things first, the book defines what a startup is and what it’s not with innovation at the heart of everything a startup is and the genesis of its definition. Startups are innovative commercial ventures built for rapid and even explosive growth. This means they are continuously in need of capital which makes their funding profile different to that of small and medium-sized business enterprises (SMEs) even though they typically start as one.
That’s where the POEM Framework comes in. It enables you as a startup founder to see what is needed from when you start building your Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to many years down the line at Series A while working to meet your startups immediate-term needs as you go along managing the risk of delivery of your promise to your customers in the market.
Over the years my family and friends always said to me; ‘you have a really simple way of explaining these things so why not put it into a book’. So while there are quite a number of extremely useful books out there on and about startups, some of which I have learnt a tremendous lot from, one thing I think some could change, is making the language simpler.
Just because you have an amazing idea that could become a great startup does not mean that you’re au fait with all the technical terms used in the fast-growing startup and business investment world. I trust this book helps.
